What is a Globe Valve?

These valves are often used in industrial, commercial, residential, oil and gas, water treatment, and chemical processing. The valve is operated by raising and lowering the disc (or globe) above the seat. The main advantage to the globe valve, unlike gate valves, is it offers throttling capability allowing for controlling the flow rate. The main disadvantage is the large pressure drop across the valve due to the design of the flow path. Globe valves are generally designed for one-way flow, meaning they have an inlet and an outlet, and the direction of flow is specified. Note: when using a globe valve for throttling occasionally turbulent flow may induce cavitation and/or vibrations that can reduce the life of the valve.
